Three eras of houses in one small village

The village has about 1,100 homes on a little less than five square miles, all in Lake County, with two country clubs. Its houses come from three eras. A few documented early houses date from about 1857 to 1875. Biltmore Country Estates, around Honey Lake, was platted in 1926 with the Biltmore Country Club. Residents formed an association in 1934 to protect the "rural country atmosphere" and incorporated the village in 1959 to control zoning. Wynstone's golf estates and its Jack Nicklaus course began in the late 1980s, and the village annexed Wynstone to keep its low-density character.

Each era brings different cabinet work:

• The early houses, from the 1850s to the 1870s. If yours is one, we fit cabinets to the walls as they are and can match the old trim.
• Biltmore houses near Honey Lake, in the subdivision platted in 1926. If yours has been added to, show us where the old house meets the new part; the cabinets are planned around it.
• Wynstone's golf estates, from the late 1980s on. Tell us what the kitchen should hold that it does not now; a butler's pantry, a library or a lower-level bar can go in the same drawings.

Permits in North Barrington

The village's building department coordinates plan review, permit issuance and inspection for all building projects, with inspections done by an outside firm. Its building department page has no list of what needs a permit, so we ask the building department about your job before the work starts, and we pull the permit ourselves when one is required.

2. The design package. Detailed measuring and drawings, one major revision, and the final price. If you move forward with Da Vinci Woodwork within 90 days on substantially the same project, the full design-package fee is credited toward your contracted work.

4. The build. Roughly 6 to 8 weeks from signed drawings for an average kitchen; built-ins and closets usually 4 to 6.
5. Installation. We install it ourselves, usually over 1 to 3 days for a full kitchen.
