From a forest farm to acre lots: the houses in Hawthorn Woods

The village began as a wooded farm on Old McHenry Road, developed from 1953. Its founder wanted to be asked before any tree came down. The first houses were large ranches on big lots, mostly built of cedar and redwood, as the Encyclopedia of Chicago tells it, and the village today describes many estates on one acre or more. It incorporated in 1958, and since 1967 its village hall has been a barn from the original farm. Newer houses came later, in planned developments such as Hawthorn Woods Country Club. In 2025, a plan with townhouses and duplexes was described as the first of its kind in the village.

So most kitchens here are in single-family houses, from the early ranches to the newer planned developments. Our Hawthorn Woods kitchen is in one of the older ranches.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen in Hawthorn Woods?

Possibly. The Village Building Department's "Interior Residential Remodeling Guidelines" (dated October 2025) say a permit is needed before any interior residential remodeling. They do not name kitchens or cabinets. A companion handout says interior alterations may not need stamped drawings if the village agrees. (Village of Hawthorn Woods, as read 2026-10-27; confirm for your address.) We confirm with the village whether your job needs one, and we pull it ourselves when it is required.

Work we have done in Hawthorn Woods

Stained wood: a dark-stained detail from our shop. The kind of work, not a Hawthorn Woods job.

Opening up a ranch kitchen in Hawthorn Woods

  • The wall to the family room. If your ranch kitchen is closed off, opening it changes the cabinet plan: one wall of cabinets may become an island, and the pantry moves to the wall that is left.
  • The finish. Our Hawthorn Woods kitchen is white. Stained wood, including white oak and walnut, and wood-look finishes are the other route. Bring photos of the rooms next to the kitchen, and we choose the finish with you.
  • Newer houses. In Hawthorn Woods Country Club and the other planned developments, tell us what the kitchen lacks: drawers, a pantry wall, an island you can sit at. A mudroom or a lower-level bar can go in the same drawings.

Mudrooms, closets and more for Hawthorn Woods homes

  • Mudrooms with lockers, a bench and boot drawers.
  • Laundry rooms with cabinets and a folding counter.
  • Closets, walk-in and reach-in, planned around what you own.
  • Bathroom vanities, floating or on the floor.
  • Family-room built-ins, bookcases and home offices.
  • The trim, which comes with nearly every job we do.

How a Hawthorn Woods project runs, 30 minutes from the shop

  1. The visit. It starts with a visit. We measure, we listen, and we give you a straight number. If it works for you, we design it with you, and only then do we build. The shop is about 30 minutes away, and the first visit and consultation are free.
  2. The design package. Detailed measuring and drawings, with one major revision, ending with the final price. If you move forward with Da Vinci Woodwork within 90 days on substantially the same project, the full design-package fee is credited toward your contracted work.
  3. The village permit, when the job needs one; we file it ourselves.
  4. The build. Roughly 6 to 8 weeks from signed drawings for an average kitchen; built-ins and closets usually 4 to 6.
  5. Installation, usually 1 to 3 days for a full kitchen.

Hawthorn Woods questions

Can you open up the kitchen in an older ranch?

Yes, for the cabinet side of it. If a wall comes out, decide early who handles the wall, the electrical and the permit; we build and fit the cabinets around the new room.

Can new cabinets be stained to go with wood trim?

We can build in stained wood, including white oak and walnut, or in a wood-look finish. At a shop visit, by appointment, you can hold our finish samples up against a piece of your trim.

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Hawthorn Woods?

The village requires a permit before any interior residential remodeling; its guidelines do not name kitchens or cabinets. We confirm with the village and file the permit ourselves when it is needed.

Can a white kitchen work in an older ranch?

Yes. Our Hawthorn Woods kitchen is white with glass-front uppers, in one of the older ranches. We help you choose the finish at the visit.

Does a kitchen need stamped drawings in Hawthorn Woods?

Not always. The village's handout says interior alterations may not need stamped drawings if the village gives permission. Ask the building department about your plan; if an architect is drawing it, we work from their set.

Do you build in Hawthorn Woods Country Club?

Yes. We serve the whole village, from the older ranches off Old McHenry Road to the Country Club and the newer developments.

Family owned. Insured and licensed where required. We build in our own shop and install the work ourselves.
