European-style kitchens and custom cabinets for Geneva homes

Geneva is about 43 miles from our Spring Grove shop, a little over an hour by car. In Geneva we built a European-style kitchen: frameless cabinets with flat-panel doors. We also build painted and stained wood kitchens, built-ins, vanities and trim, and we install them.

The county seat, the historic district and the Swedish town

Geneva has been the Kane County seat since 1836. It became a village in 1867 and a city in 1887. The railroad brought Swedish workers, and by 1895, half of Geneva's citizens spoke Swedish as their first language. The town still has a large number of its mid-to-late 19th-century homes, in Italianate, Greek Revival and Queen Anne styles, and many older houses are built of stone quarried along the Fox River. Geneva has one local historic district of about 670 properties, designated in 1987. Frank Lloyd Wright began the first of his three Geneva projects in 1906, among them the Fabyan Villa on the old Riverbank estate. Kent Shodeen's developments from 1961 led to rapid growth in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, more than doubling the population.

Historic district or newer, the house sets the job:

  • In a house in the historic district: painted or stained wood doors, framed or inset, and trim matched to the house. When an old profile is no longer sold, we make it in our shop.
  • In a house from the 1970s to the 2000s: a new kitchen in the layout you choose.

Do I need a permit in Geneva, and does the historic district apply?

Geneva lists "Kitchen Remodel" under "Required Building Permits," and its kitchen remodel guide opens: "A building permit is required prior to remodeling your kitchen." The guide covers the electrical, plumbing and ventilation work in a kitchen; it does not say whether cabinets alone need a permit. For the historic district, the city's FAQ answers the question "Is interior work or routine maintenance reviewed?" with "No," and says interior work "will not require review." (City of Geneva building permits, kitchen remodel guide and historic preservation FAQ, as read 2026-10-28; confirm for your address.)

So a kitchen remodel in Geneva needs a building permit, and the historic commission does not review the inside of a house. Ask the Building Division about a cabinet-only change. We pull a permit ourselves when one is required.

A Geneva kitchen, and work nearby

  • In Geneva: a European-style kitchen, frameless with flat-panel doors.
  • Campton Hills: a modern flat-panel kitchen.
  • West Chicago: a knotty pine kitchen with log-style island legs we made, and a double vanity in the same house.
  • Schaumburg: a modern flat-panel kitchen in a concrete-look melamine.
  • Barrington: a white frameless kitchen with melamine fronts, a primary bath vanity, a wardrobe wall and a window bench, in one house.

Frameless or framed: planning a Geneva kitchen

  • European-style frameless. Our Geneva kitchen is built this way. It is our specialty, and the more budget-friendly way to a full custom kitchen. Its trade-off is a narrower color range: solid colors, or wood-look melamine or veneer.
  • Painted or stained wood. Framed or inset, for a house in the historic district or a new one that wants a traditional look.
  • The permit. A kitchen remodel needs one in Geneva. The electrical, plumbing and vent work goes to licensed trades; we build and install the cabinets.
  • Trim. Nearly every job we do includes it.

The Geneva kitchen is our work on record in the city. Other work we take on, in the historic district or a newer subdivision:

  • Built-ins: bookcases and libraries, media walls and window benches.
  • Butler's pantries, mudrooms and laundry rooms.
  • Vanities and closets.
  • Bars and wine storage.
  • Stairs, mantels and trim.

The historic district, the river and nearby towns

Geneva lies on the Fox River between St. Charles and Batavia, about 40 miles west of Chicago, and the Fox River Trail and the Illinois Prairie Path pass through it. The historic district covers the older center, and the newer subdivisions spread out around it. The Fabyan Villa and its windmill stand on the old Riverbank estate. We serve all of Geneva. Nearby, see our page for Campton Hills, or all the towns we serve. We also serve St. Charles and Batavia.

Geneva questions

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Geneva?

Yes. The city lists "Kitchen Remodel" under required building permits. For a cabinet-only change, ask the Building Division. We pull a permit when one is required.

No, by the city's own FAQ: interior work is not reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission. Work that changes the outside of a house in the district is.
