Woodland lots and modernist houses

Riverwoods calls itself a "woodlands preservation community with a semi-rural character." It incorporated in 1959 and covers about four square miles. Most streets are private, kept up by about 30 homeowners associations, and a permit is needed even to remove a dead tree. The village is known for modernist houses: Edward Humrich designed more than 40 here, and its 2025 Modernist Homes Tour showed restored houses by Humrich and by Keck & Keck. Humrich's first house in the village (1947) has exposed brick, wood beams and floor-to-ceiling windows on just under two acres.

What a modern house in the woods asks of cabinets:

  • Clean lines. Flat slab doors, long horizontal runs and no visible face frame look right in these houses. European-style frameless is our specialty, in solid colors or a wood-look veneer. For real walnut or white oak, we build stained wood cabinets.
  • Glass where cabinets would go. If floor-to-ceiling windows leave you few walls, an island and a tall pantry wall on a solid wall can do the storage work.
  • Brick and beams. We scribe cabinets and panels to exposed brick so the joint is tight.

Our own Riverwoods job was in a traditional house (below).

Permits in Riverwoods

The village's permit page lists permits for renovations, interior demolition and all electrical, plumbing and mechanical changes. It does not mention cabinets or kitchens by name, so a kitchen with new circuits or moved plumbing will need one. (Village of Riverwoods, as read 2026-10-27; confirm with the building department.) If a permit is needed, we pull it ourselves. Tell us if your street is private, so we can plan the delivery.

  • Deer Park: a floor-to-ceiling wood-grain panel wall with hidden closet doors.
  • Glenview: in one house, a white island with stacks of drawers and a wood top, a white gloss double vanity and a built-in desk with bookcases.
  • Northbrook: a taupe vanity and tall cabinet with gold pulls.

Before you plan a kitchen in Riverwoods

  • The street and the association. Most Riverwoods streets are private and kept up by homeowners associations. Ask yours about deliveries and work hours before the cabinets arrive.
  • The trees. The village protects its woodlands, and even a dead tree needs a permit to come down. It can shape any addition or new door to the yard.
  • The permit. Renovations and any electrical, plumbing or mechanical change need one. A kitchen with new circuits or a moved sink will; we file it.
  • Modern or traditional. Riverwoods has modernist houses and traditional ones. Our job here was in a traditional house; the planning is the same, but the cabinet style is not.

Built-ins, vanities and more for Riverwoods homes

Our Riverwoods work is a kitchen, built-ins and the bathroom vanities in a traditional house, with the trim. For houses here we also build:

  • Flat-panel frameless cabinets for the modernist houses, in solid colors or a wood look.
  • Libraries and media walls, fitted between windows.
  • Closets with drawers and shelves.
  • Mudrooms for the door to the woods.
  • Floating vanities, hung on a rail on the wall.

How a Riverwoods job runs, private street and all

  1. The visit. It starts with a visit. We measure, we listen, and we give you a straight number. If it works for you, we design it with you, and only then do we build. Riverwoods is about 40 minutes from the shop; the visit and consultation are free.
  2. The design package, with drawings, one major revision and the final price.
  3. The permit, where the work needs one; we file it.
  4. The build. Roughly 6 to 8 weeks from signed drawings for an average kitchen; built-ins and closets usually 4 to 6.
  5. Delivery and installation, planned around your association's rules, usually 1 to 3 days for a full kitchen.

The wooded lots of Riverwoods, and nearby towns

The village runs from the Des Plaines River and the Ryerson Conservation Area to the associations further in; its named communities include Hiawatha Woods, Thorngate and Meadowlake. We serve all of Riverwoods. Nearby, see our pages for Lake Forest, Kildeer and Long Grove, or all the towns we serve. We also serve Deerfield, Highland Park and Northbrook.

Riverwoods questions

Can you build cabinets for a mid-century modern house?

Yes. Flat doors and frameless boxes, in solid colors or a wood-look veneer, are our specialty. See how we build cabinets.

Can you build in walnut or white oak to go with paneling in the house?

Yes. We build in walnut, white oak and the other species available here. Finish samples are at the shop, by appointment.

Do you build for traditional houses in Riverwoods too?

Yes. Our Riverwoods job was a kitchen, built-ins and vanities in a traditional house.

Can you deliver on a private street?

Yes. Tell us if your street is private and what your association asks, and we plan the delivery around it.

Where do the cabinets go when windows take up the walls?

A floor-to-ceiling pantry wall on a solid wall can hold what upper cabinets would hold, and an island takes the rest.

Can you build for a Humrich-designed house?

Edward Humrich designed more than 40 houses in Riverwoods. Tell us what the house has now and what stays; flat doors, long, low runs and stained walnut or white oak suit that style.

Family owned. Insured and licensed where required. We build in our own shop and install the work ourselves.
