Custom cabinets for Inverness homes, Cape Cod to contemporary

Inverness is about 26 miles from our Spring Grove shop, roughly 35 minutes. We build kitchens, closets, built-ins and vanities for its houses, and we have finished work in Schaumburg, Arlington Heights and Barrington nearby.

A planned village of one-acre lots

Arthur McIntosh began planning Inverness in 1926 on about 1,500 acres around a golf course. Its designer laid the roads to follow the rolling land and approved each house plan and where it sat on the lot; the minimum lot was one acre. The first homes, around the Inverness Golf Club, were lived in by 1939. Most early houses were one-story Cape Cod, Williamsburg, English Cotswold and French Provincial designs, set on the rises, with no fences, curbs or street lights. The village incorporated in 1962, and its village hall stands at the Four Silos. The median house today was built in 1984.

What those houses need from new cabinets:

  • Traditional styles. Cape Cod, Williamsburg and French Provincial houses suit painted framed cabinets, raised or shaker doors, crown molding and a furniture-style island.
  • One-story houses. If yours is one of the early one-story houses, tell us which walls can move; an island that works from both sides may fit.
  • Newer houses on the later lots. Tell us which rooms are on the list besides the kitchen: closets, vanities, the garage.

Do I need a permit in Inverness?

For a remodel, yes. The village says permits are required for "any building addition, remodel or alteration, plumbing & electrical." It does not name cabinets. It also asks homeowners to get their homeowners association's approval before applying. (Village of Inverness, as read 2026-10-27; confirm for your address.) Start with the association; once it approves, we confirm with the village and pull the permit ourselves when one is needed.

Before you plan an Inverness kitchen: the association first

  • Association approval. Inverness asks homeowners to get their association's approval before they apply for a permit. Start there; it is the first step on the calendar.
  • The permit. The village requires one for any remodel or alteration, plumbing and electrical. We confirm what your kitchen needs and file it once the association has approved.
  • The garage. If the garage has bare walls, cabinets can take the overflow from the house. We built large garage cabinets and storage in Inverness.

Garage cabinets, libraries and more for Inverness homes

Across two Inverness jobs we built a kitchen, built-ins, library shelving, two vanities, and large garage cabinets and storage. For houses here we also build:

  • Garage cabinets for tools, sports gear and the overflow from the house.
  • Library shelving and home offices.
  • Vanities for the primary and guest baths.
  • Closets and mudrooms.
  • Family-room built-ins.

Association, permit, build: an Inverness project

  1. The visit. It starts with a visit. We measure, we listen, and we give you a straight number. If it works for you, we design it with you, and only then do we build. Inverness is about 35 minutes from the shop; the visit and consultation are free.
  2. Drawings and the final price, through the design package, with one major revision. The drawings are also useful when you go to your association.
  3. Association approval, then the permit, which we file.
  4. The build. Roughly 6 to 8 weeks from signed drawings for an average kitchen; built-ins and closets usually 4 to 6.
  5. Installation, usually 1 to 3 days for a full kitchen, then the trim.

Around the golf club and the one-acre lots, and nearby towns

The first houses stand around the Inverness Golf Club and the later ones on the rolling one-acre lots; named subdivisions include Inverness Hills, Cheviot Hills and Braymore Hills. We serve all of Inverness. Nearby, see our page for South Barrington, and we also serve Barrington Hills and Long Grove; see all the towns we serve. We also serve Palatine and Barrington.

Inverness questions

Do I need my association's OK before the village permit?

The village says yes. Ask your association what it wants to see for your project.

Can you build painted cabinets for a traditional house?

Yes. We build painted wood doors in a Renner Italian high-end finish on framed cabinets, with full or partial overlay doors.

Do you build garage cabinets?

Yes. In Inverness we built large garage cabinets and storage. Tell us what needs to go on the walls, and we plan the cabinets around it.

Can you build library shelving?

Yes. In Inverness we built library shelving and other built-ins. See custom built-ins.

What goes in a garage cabinet wall?

Tall cabinets for sports gear and tools, base cabinets under a work top, and wall cabinets for what you use less often, planned around the cars and the doors.

Do you build for Cape Cod and Williamsburg houses?

Yes: painted framed cabinets, crown molding and a furniture-style island suit them.

Can garage cabinets and a kitchen be one job?

Yes. One set of drawings can cover the garage along with the rooms inside the house. We have built large garage cabinets and storage in Inverness.
